WHAT IS IT?
Now in its 24th year, the Chuckle Club is one of about a hundred and fifty Comedy Clubs in London. We have been described in the Observer and Time Out as "London's Friendliest Comedy Club". Every Saturday evening , I (Eugene Cheese), get on stage in the very comfortable Jerusalem Restaurant in Rathbone Place, just off Oxford Street, to Compere the evening,
starting with the traditional rendition (or RENDING!) of the Self-Written
The Audience , are prompted (or BULLIED!) into joining in. They usually do, due to the fact that when they hear the Cheese singing voice, they instantly feel superior! I ought to know better for a man of my age, but silliness is encouraged! We then all join in, in unison, to sing that well-known piece of Classical Opera - . Cab Calloway is my idol. When this ritual (known in Show-Biz Circles as the "Warm-Up" is over, I get on with the main part of the evening.
I introduce three main acts, each performs about 25 minutes of the funniest material there is. Also there are usually two "Open Spots"- acts who are often new to the Circuit. Some of them are wonderful, some are dire, but that's half the fun!
There is no special type of person who come to the club, ages range from 18 to 90, and there is no dress-code We have a policy of presenting non-racist non-sexist and non- anti-gay acts, so nobody need feel an outsider.
